நுகர்வோர் பொருளாதார உணர்வுகளின் அடிப்படை அளவான முட்டையின் விலை, நவம்பர் தேசியத் தேர்தலுக்கு முன்னதாக இரு அரசியல் கட்சிகளுக்கும் பிரச்சாரப் பிரச்சினையாக மாறியது. மளிகைச் சாமான்களின் விலை உயர்வால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட வாக்காளர்களுக்கு பணவீக்கம்தான் முக்கியக் கவலை என்று கருத்துக் கணிப்புகள் தொடர்ந்து கண்டறிந்துள்ளன.

அமெரிக்க அதிபராகத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ள டொனால்ட் டிரம்ப், மளிகைப் பொருட்களின் விலையைக் குறைப்பதை தனது பிரச்சாரத்தின் முக்கிய அங்கமாக மாற்றினார். விலைகளைக் குறைப்பது “மிகக் கடினமானது” என்று அவர் ஒப்புக்கொண்டார்.

The average price of a dozen large Grade A eggs was $3.65 in November, up from $3.37 in October, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week, up from $2.50 at the start of the year, as farmers battle a deadly strain of H5N1 that continues to disrupt the U.S. egg supply.

The U.S. laying hen population fell 3%, or 315 million birds, in October from a year earlier, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and egg production fell 4%.

The latest Consumer Price Index, or CPI, showed egg prices rose 37.5% from a year ago. Food prices rose 2.4% over the same period.

The price hike comes as shoppers stock up for the holidays, as flocks of laying hens remain small and as producers struggle to recover from losses from bird flu over the past two years.

The wholesale price for large eggs hit $5.57 a dozen in the Midwest on Wednesday, up 150% from a year ago and beating the previous record of $5.46 from December 2022, according to Expana.

In California, where regulations prohibit farmers from raising chickens in cages, a dozen eggs are at a record $8.85 a dozen, the data firm said. Some stores in the state have imposed restrictions on egg purchases.

The egg situation could worsen for the $67 billion poultry industry. The USDA has cut its forecasts for egg production and exports through 2025, while raising its price outlook.

The spread of bird flu — the H5N1 strain of the virus that causes bird flu — has hit poultry hard, California declared a state of emergency this week after hundreds of dairy farms in the state were infected with the virus. Of the 35 million laying hens killed by the virus this year, nearly half have been infected in the past three months.

This month, workers in Iowa, a major egg-producing state, began culling a large flock of 4.2 million hens that had tested positive.

Egg prices, a key gauge of consumer economic sentiment, have become a campaign issue for both political parties ahead of the November national elections. Polls have consistently found that inflation is the top concern for voters hit by rising grocery prices.

US President-elect Donald Trump has made lowering grocery prices a key part of his campaign. He acknowledged that lowering prices is “very difficult.”

There are also growing concerns that bird flu could trigger another pandemic. Last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned of the first serious case in a person in Louisiana who had a backyard flock of birds.

The virus has infected 61 people so far this year, according to federal data, mostly among people who had contact with dairy cows. While the H5 variants are different in cattle and chickens, the former killed two domestic cats in California and infected three other cats.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told Reuters that the agency has funding to buy some chicken vaccines, and it would be logical for the incoming Trump administration to continue supporting vaccine development.

U.S. farmers called on the Biden administration in September to allow vaccinations for chickens, turkeys and cows against bird flu, ahead of the migration of wild birds.

Lawmakers say the USDA should speed up its vaccine research. “It is clear that the current outbreak has no end in sight,” a dozen members of Congress, led by Republican Randy Feenstra and Democrat Jim Costa, said in a letter to Vilsack.

Vilsack previously said that the vaccination campaign could hinder exports if importing countries feel that the vaccine will mask the presence of the virus.

“Widespread vaccination of commercial chickens is not possible in the short term,” Vilsack wrote in a letter to members of Congress in March.
